Meet Hindu expat in UAE who fasts in full spirit every Ramadan

From Solidarity to Self-Discovery: A Hindu Expat's Unexpected Ramadan Journey

Neelam Gokulsing, a 26-year-old Mauritian expat and Fintech professional in Dubai, never expected fasting during Ramadan to become a path towards self-discovery. It began as a simple gesture of solidarity with her Muslim friends in Malaysia, where she once lived and worked.

Fasting for Friendship:

Back in 2021, surrounded by a vibrant Muslim community, Neelam joined her friends for suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (evening meal) during Ramadan. It was a way to experience their culture firsthand and build stronger bonds.

Fasting in Dubai:

Continuing the tradition upon her arrival in Dubai, Neelam gained firsthand experience of the challenges and rewards of fasting. Witnessing colleagues observe the fast during work hours gave her a deeper understanding of their dedication.

A Journey Within:

Today, Ramadan holds a deeper meaning for Neelam. It's about spiritual cleansing, self-reflection, and teamwork. Waking up for suhoor and relying on simple meals throughout the day has heightened her awareness of her own desires and thought patterns.

Breaking Fast, Building Community:

Iftar meals hold a special place in Neelam's Ramadan experience. They're a time to connect with colleagues, sharing delicious food (dates, juices, fruits, vegetables, and meats) at the end of a long day. This shared experience fosters a strong sense of community, celebrating togetherness and resilience.

The Power of Discipline:

Fasting during Ramadan demands determination. Initially, Neelam experienced the physical adjustments associated with cleansing. However, with each passing day, her body adapted. The key, she emphasizes, lies in habit and unwavering determination.

Looking Ahead:

Having embraced the spirit of Ramadan, Neelam is setting her sights on a new goal: learning Arabic. This will not only strengthen her social connections but also benefit her career in Dubai.

Neelam's story highlights the transformative power of cultural exchange. What began as a simple act of solidarity blossomed into a journey of self-discovery and a deeper appreciation for the Muslim community around her.
